HIDDEN HABITAT
THE SECRET MYTHOLOGIES OF PLACE
Dark places can cultivate hidden desires.

We may not be able to see the spaces underneath our beds or the cracks behind our sofas, but nevertheless they can still fill us with a perculiar sense of dread. The spaces that surround us are always a mix of aesthetic realities and hidden mythologies.

This series of studies attempt to visualise hidden spaces. In the first films, hidden space in the home has been cast. These films are visual maps of a very ordinary terraced house. Lit areas represent areas that can be seen by a person standing in that particular room, whilst shadow space shows spaces that are hidden from them, within and behind objects. The model of the house has been removed in the final film, leaving behind the eerie visual field that its geometry has created.

The later studies have expanded this understanding of space into the city. They map firstly street lighting patterns, and later net curtain patterns in Kings Cross area. The purpose behind these studies is to understand the city as a careful choreography of hidden and seen. In the city, power is not dictated by solid masses but by visual fields, brightly lit streets and CCTV hotspots produce highly controlled civic centres; whilst hidden areas provide opportunities for subversive intrigue.
