DOUBLE HOUSE
SECRET SPACES FOR ALL THE FAMILY
What if our domestic secrets were designed for?

The English house is a peculiar clash of public display and private curiosities. We currently live in homes that only accommodate the ideal aspects, and not the reality, of our domestic habits. The current housing aesthetic does not match it's darker content.

The double house is a mutant of an existing terrace house in Bingfield street, Kings Cross and a parasitic structure of secrets. The movements and habits of a nuclear family were studied and mapped over 24 hours. Based on this information, a visual map was created for each family member detailing all the areas in the terrace that they looked at. There were some areas of the terrace that were dominated by a particular family member's visual field, and other areas that certain family members never looked at.

In the double house, visual cores, particularly areas that are constantly looked at; are preserved, whilst areas that are only visible to some, or none, are dissected and mutated into secret rooms designed for individual behaviours. In this way the house's double responds to existing family power structures and living patterns, choreographing events between hidden and exposed spaces, redefining the hierarchies, values and visual experience of all family members.
